A Tribute to the Lovers in my ghostly dream....
What do you do when you lose someone, someone who was your last hope? Your last hope of finding your love, your precious memories and to keep from crawling into that hole called despair and depression? When he turns to you and says he is leaving to a far away country and hopes to never return to you? Do you say “wait please? Don’t go?” Do you reach for him and call out “You promised to help me find him?!” And when he turns back toward you and exclaims that that is the cause, that the promise you keep insisting on has driven him mad. He says he can’t take it any longer and drifts away. Your hand still reaches and your voice still cries desperately that he is your last hope. The described above has just occurred to our heroin Koubi Maki, and as she watches this person leave her, a crying maiden of hopelessness and great sadness to fend for herself, wet hands shielding her river-like features of a face, kneeling low to the black ground surrounded in dark fog, a symbol of her memories. A ghostly figure in this back ground takes notice, perhaps her lost moment? She suddenly feels its presence and pauses in her sobbing. But then a something in her snaps, like a switch, blackness overcomes her senses and everything in her stops. Her crying, her shaking, her entire being becomes still and the world around her spirals. The rain-filled clouds swirl, the ground swims underneath, trees groan, wind howls mournfully, and even Koubi’s body creaks. The ocean above is dark, smeared with colors so unnatural and so evil one would cringe. Koubi’s body forces its self up and lifts a blank face to the otherworldly sky. The face that the ghost had noticed before has changed from a crying beauty to something just as unnatural as the heavens. The eyes are no longer a unique blue and green, but a bloody red and grey. The tears that froze on the cheeks that seemed to turn hallow. Claws of an animal extrude from boney hands and a figure of a girl morphs into a subject unknown to the scientists of the world. Hair once lovely and elegantly flowing has grown, not long and beautiful like many describe, but dry and greasy with a color often inked in comics of the unruly kind. Her lips that were once so tender and plump are now dry and sharply expressed including the fangs that hang from them. Who is this girl turned demon? Asks the ghost to himself, and while the girl herself is still conscious inside she feels the other life inside her soul and shrinks from its evil. She can feel how her body changes and the gaping hole in her heart that then holds the evil, her mind as it splits like a river for the newcomer. Who can help her? Just as the world almost goes black eternally, a hand, not belonging to either lives, takes hold of her conscious and saves her, though unknown to her how. Her body immediately returns to original form and the evil disperses. A voice she thought she recognized speaks to her; she answers her best but is so shaken and deprived of energy from almost loosing her life that she lays down where she is in the middle of the unnatural world that is still slowly spiraling, and sleeps. The last she remembers is the outline of the apparition she earlier noticed.
Just as Koubi wakes, she tries to remember her dream but she can’t. And she opens her eyes to find herself in her room in bed, dressed but wet. She opens her eyes to gaze for the first but not the last time into the eyes of a ghost hovering just in before her face. For the split second that they do, she takes notice of his eyes, the only feature she could see clearly and without fail. The eyes; she sees are a unique color of grey-blue and the tiniest fragment of green, almost like hers, and seemed to laugh at her, look straight through her, thoughts and soul. Yet they were hard to make-out as well because of his draping hair the color of clouds that floated before his face. His face, which was of course see-through and pale, had handsome features and a mouth that seemed to be sneering. She dares not look at anything else; scared he might leave, or do harm, or try to frighten her, which he already succeeded in doing, or something else. Koubi knows he is a ghost just because he is so close to her, she can’t feel him physically and he floated. He suddenly smiles evilly and whispers in that voice she thought she knew “Hello”. Koubi’s mind goes blank and she utters not a peep. She becomes so scared that she can’t move. He continues to speak though she hears nothing and can only realize that he is talking in an unfriendly teasing tone. The ghost is introducing himself and saying something about pity and wishing to help her for only he can. He lifts an invisible hand to her face and suddenly she hears him perfectly. "Here to help. I felt pity for you and I knew I could save you" he is saying in his moaning voice that was no longer familiar, it was now husky and strong with a chilling air as it made its way past her. She still said nothing. His eyes took a cruel gleam and the smile revealed teeth of a shark. She flinched and tried to get her bearings and in a hesitant voice said "Help? Why? I don't think I need help, I'm fine aren't I?" He paused and said somewhat to himself "Hmm... It seems that your body remembers but sadly you don't or maybe this is something to be happy about...hee" "Eh?" Koubi suddenly felt a trembling, deep inside her. It grew till she was crying and was looking at her now shaking hands in frightened confusion. Her entire, pale, cold as death, body vibrates with unknown emotion. She could not sustain it. Her eyes looked about the room on their own with tears streaming down her cheeks and she lost all sanity. “W-w-what’s w-w-wrong with me? I c-c-can’t stop shaking! Agh!” Her knees give in to the unknown despair and she barely manages to catch her self when she feels him. She hadn’t sensed it at first even though she knew he was there. She felt, rather then saw, the ghostly hands reach their way around her, holding her close but to whom? The gentle, some-how warm hands caressing her colorless face, massaging the frightened arms, the arms that follow the hands wrap around her quaking shoulders. And a voice follows, singing a song she knew yet didn’t. It was so soothing, so sweet, so filled with emotion, she was calmed. “I stopped…” was her first thought and reaction. But why? Then her second reaction was to notice him. She spun around and leapt away from his bounds in one motion, and since he was a ghost it was easy.

She turns to face him again, him hovering above her bed, while she stands unsteadily at the foot. “W-who are you?” She asks with some firmness, backing further away. “Hrm?” He follows her, a grin still on his features. She feels panic and asks more “What are you? Why are you ‘helping’ me?” Her back hits the other side of the room, a wall of course, and she looks for escape. Koubi happens to look up when she sees the ghost’s eyes take a different look, almost of sadness then return to their former glory and he asks her “Didn’t I already tell you?” Here his hand graces her cheek, she flinches again and he presents more teeth. With a small laugh, “I pity you so I think I will help you because I know what is troubling you, I have seen what exists in you and now you need me. So here I am. I’m what you were searching for, a spirit. But my name? You already know that…” he explains. “What are my troubles? I can’t seem to remember nearly everyone and I feel like I am looking for someone, but whom? I must be suffering from amnesia or otherwise I would think someone did this to me! And, though I am afraid to ask, what is within me? What are these bruises, why was I shaking so hard, how did I meet you!?” She realized he was waiting for her to stop so she went silent. She lowers her head and waits for him. For once his smile disappears for a moment but then returns but with a different air. “That is what I am here for! And one thing I can tell you is that it can be controlled by your emotions and feelings. Your memories well I have none too and you are my only way of retrieving them so we can search together. This is all that needs to be said now because you look awfully sick!” He finishes with only a hint of concern. Koubi seemed to realize how weak she was once he commented on her and when she did it struck like a wave and she crumpled. Somehow, even though he is a ghost, he carried her to her bed luckily not far away. “Imagine if my family saw me floating like this!” Was her only thought as he did this. After being placed gently on the bed she feels the sickening vibrations again. This time slightly knowing what was happening she looks to the ghost, her eyes filled with fear amid the blue and green colors that were dimly tainted red, his grey-blue eyes were thoughtful. Finally after watching her suffer a few moments he reached down with an arm, brought his eyes and head to her side and whispered “Do not hate me for what I am doing because this will save you and me a lot of suffering.” And with that the ghost gently pressed invisible lips to her quivering pair. Out of the side of his mouth he said “Orpheus”. “Orpheus?” She thought lastly. Koubi flushed, and because of this last wave of emotion, fainted. “At last” thought Orpheus. He hovered himself on the other side of her bed and continued to guard her, watching, with little interest, her sleep. “I used too much energy. If I had kept it up much longer I would disappear.” He rested his chin on a hand and went deep in thought. Orpheus’s smile was now a thoughtful frown and his eyes looked bored. “She was tough for having been able to even move after what happened, but her questions and talking was very annoying! However, since Koubi is my way to freedom I must stick to her..." His gaze rose to look distantly at the window.

When Koubi woke up again it was to see her mother’s face. “Mom?” She croaked. The older woman looked worried and very sleepy, like she had been woken up. “What’s wrong?” “You were whimpering and crying in your sleep dear, is everything alright?” “Huh?” Koubi wondered for a moment if all that had just happened to her was a dream. “No, it couldn’t be, why can I still feel his kiss? Why can’t I still remember anything?” Koubi looked up helplessly, wondering what she should think. “Mom did-did you see or feel anything when you came in my room?” “No dear just that I was about to have a heart attack when I saw you in your bed looking like you were the one having an attack.” She replied to Koubi, Mrs. Maki stroked her daughter’s forehead. “Did I wake up anybody else?” Her mom told her no and then that she was going back to bed. “Sweet dreams”, “Yeah night Mom” now left alone, the darkness started to spin around her. She whimpered. Hee, she heard quiet laughter that in the darkness. “This is not a dream Koubi” Orpheus said in her ear. She almost fell out of her bed. The way he said her name sent chills down her spine. Orpheus laughed again “Sorry did I frighten you?” She didn’t respond, “So this is real?” He laughed and Koubi could imagine him grinning. “Eeep!” She felt a hand on her shoulder that pushed her down. “Go back to sleep” “I-I don’t think I can” “Try” slightly scared; she tried and was asleep in a few minutes. Orpheus had gone to sleep too when Koubi started whimpering and crying in her sleep. “That’s some dream, wonder if it’s about what her past” He tapped her forehead lightly using his energy to calm her down. She went quiet and he settled back down. “GYAA!!” She screamed bloody-murder and he hoped she hadn’t just woken the whole house-hold. Orpheus tried to calm her again but her struggling got worse and he thought “What’s going on!?” He noticed for the first time how pained her expression was. “This is really annoying!” Just so her family wouldn’t come, he carried her outside and set her down at the base of a flowering pear tree. “Fine, time for extreme measures and limits” Orpheus muttered. Koubi opened her eyes and he saw they were red. “Aw jeez, here we go” Orpheus lifted his blue-grey eyes to a sliver moon; he began to glow and look less and less transparent. Suddenly, all at once, Orpheus was invisible, visible, and mist. Orpheus/mist rose high into the sky. Down below, where Koubi was lying, her shoulders were shaking and heaving. Orpheus knew that in order to help her, he would have to sacrifice something—himself and to do that he would become part of her, using his energy as a seal. Koubi could see all this like a dream; she saw the glowing mist hovering in the air right in front of the moon making it look like a strange cloud. She saw it fall back down to earth directly above her and enter her. It opened her mouth and wound its way down her throat, her stomach, her heart and all though-out her body. Till suddenly she herself was glowing, faintly, but glowing a white-blue haze, bright near her heart. Once again, a something in her clicked this time not as drastically nor all the way, and she felt somewhat like herself again and some more. It gave off a warm, soothing touch like when he had held her. What was it? Like a gentle smile, or was that an arousing memory? Koubi was beginning to feel like she knew Orpheus, like she knew him long before now and was at that moment seeing him again. Tears welled up again however; they were carrying a different emotion, joy? Koubi had no clue as long as her memories were lost and she was filled with wonder…

The feeling slowly faded away and her glowing died down. The mist that was also Orpheus steamed out her mouth and nose. It rose till it was a haze in front of the moon again. The mist formed a shape, a body, and there was Orpheus again and yet not. Koubi still felt like he was in her, like he had morphed himself to her, and for some unknown reason felt happy and satisfied but only slightly. Koubi gazed up just as Orpheus opened his eyes and looked down and the two locked eyes again. Her tainted but grateful eyes brimmed with joyous but confused tears gazed on high to his newly morphed eyes trimmed a unique blue looking down to her unemotionally. Orpheus was still immersed in silver murkiness yet appeared more visible tinged in the same unique blue. Koubi imagines the smile she felt earlier. “I-I remember it, that-that smile!” She feels stun as the memory forms in her mind’s eye. In the memory all that can be seen is the lower half of a face, and its smile. It’s a smile so warm that Koubi even remembers how she felt at the time, pure happiness, bliss, safe, and another emotion still lost to her. A faint smile, a small blush, what was she remembering? Orpheus wondered, although not very long because he received it too, yet in a different way. It started with her getting a memory, then feeling different and also similar convulsions, him gaining the memory from her and it changing into his memory in exchange for his energy to stop the convulsion. He was taking her life and memories from her and she didn’t know it. The memories he took transformed into what were his pasts and became his. This was his only reason for helping her whether she knew or not. And now this exchange takes place for the first time. Koubi’s eyes widen as the pain starts, Orpheus comes down and only touches her, causing his energy to deplete and hers too. The memory she gained vanishes from her mind and rushes to his, changing into a different memory that is now Orpheus’s. In Orpheus’s mind he sees his memory now. It consists of a boy-Himself? - And a girl. It is faint and all he can tell is that the boy is smiling and then Orpheus sees the girl’s face. “Koubi…” his mind whispers, identifying the girl. Orpheus feels some of the same shock that Koubi did…

Both pause, so moved that it takes them a moment to become focused again. Orpheus regains composure first and takes the chance to take Koubi back inside. Inside, both are exhausted and deep asleep, the moon as full and bright before like nothing had taken place.
An alarm clock blares in Koubi’s ear and when she glances over at it she sees six o’ clock blinking in red light. Koubi looks around her dim room searching for Orpheus. “Did he leave?” She wonders and tosses over. “Gya!” Temporarily shocked at finding Orpheus right above her she observes his face for a second time. He’s sleeping…why does he look like he’s in pain? And for once he isn’t sneering. She noted mentally. “Good morning!” Orpheus greeted her with a wicked grin and opened eyes. Koubi fell off her bed that time, which caused Orpheus to begin laughing uncontrollably. She rubbed her head tenderly and nervously got up. “I’m up…” she looked back at Orpheus only to see that he wasn’t there anymore. In a daze, she wiped off drool and cautiously went to the bathroom to dress. I thought he was going to kiss me or something again… Back in her room, Koubi saw that Orpheus was gone again. “Breakfast is ready everyone!” Called Mrs. Mika and Koubi started again. Can I really act normal after what happened? she asked herself. She finished getting ready and after grabbing her backpack hurried out her room. Koubi’s family was richer than most so she lived in a home that amazed her friends when she could have them sleep over-night. The house was not more elegant than an average home, just grander. Koubi lived with both her parents, a sister the age of twelve, fraternal twins, and a pet mini-monkey named Kanta. Their abode was a red brick, four and a half bedrooms with three bathrooms complete with pool, up-to-date kitchen, living room, dining room, two door garage, office, and playroom. Koubi and her siblings’ quarters were styled specifically for them. Her room was picturesque, her sister Mokota’s had a charming feel to it, and the five-year-old twins Trent and Brandon’s were playful and mischievous. Located at the end of the corridor were two bathrooms, one for the girls and one for the boys. The playroom was vast and gave off a childish and innocent appeal, it was also used for homework doing and study time. Her parents’ room held a walking closet, luxury bath, an office, and king bed. Koubi’s mother Madeline who was American and her father Tsuruga, a native to Japan met at a college in Colorado and decided to marry after graduating. The new couple rented a home near Madeline’s job and lived contently. Month’s later; Tsuruga accepted a job working in architect which was located in another state. They moved to the new town and built a home for three hoping to have a child. Madeline gave birth to Koubi and loved Koubi so much that she decided she wanted a boy too. That was when Mokota came and then the twins. And before each birth the couple added a room which ended with them owning a mansion-like estate. An estate that was provided for by both parents, the father who went to work and the mother who worked over the internet. Koubi’s mom dwelt with most of the cooking while the kids and father helped clean the house. Koubi preferred to spend time out in the back yard with her mini-monkey Kanta, Mokota liked to stay in her room, Trent and Brandon enjoyed the playroom, and mother and father were usually in the playroom too doting on everything their children did. Kanta the mini-monkey was well groomed and cared for by everyone in the family but mostly by Koubi who he tended to favor. Their pool was used often and the Mika’s had a family friend that came every once in a while to help tend the front and back gardens. The back garden was like a forest to Koubi and she loved it, it was her favorite place to think. The trees created shade and an eerie wind blew nonstop through them. Her father wanted to cut down some of trees because they scared Mokota but Koubi begged him to leave them be. Koubi rushed down the corridor checking each of her siblings’ rooms, she discovered Brandon sitting in his closet and Trent putting on his socks. “Hurry you two!” she urged them. Both lifted his head and nodded. She smiled and continued down to the kitchen. There she greeted her parents and Mokota with a good morning. A good breakfast and a good forecast for ahead was the response and so Koubi left home in a good mood. On the bus that she took to get to school, she still felt exhausted and Koubi fell asleep. Her siblings sitting beside her looked up at her with interest. She woke herself up just as the bus got to her school and she slid by her siblings to get off.
The school was of three different buildings and taught four grades. The main building was a bricked two-story-center-placed structure with stairs and columns to a two-door entryway. It housed the main office, lockers, a lunch room, counselor’s office, nurse, a few classes, etc. The east building was also bricked but one-story and contained the science, math, social studies, languages, and many other primary classes that dwelt with a text book. It was also had a science lab, small gym, and home ethnic. The west building was almost the same as the east nut maybe smaller. It held a library, art room, orchestra/choir/band room, English classes, study hall, etc. Koubi preferred the west building because it was the most fun. She enjoyed the library and the classes there and in the room she was in she could hear the instruments play through the vents. They sounded so lovely she wished she could go in there and watch them. See how the bows would move at the same time, the drums hit each beat with impossible accuracy and the choirs’ eyes as they sang their hearts out. She wanted to observe the pianist as fingers moved up and down it. Koubi stepped off the bus and onto a long pavement that was as well wide. The atmosphere smelled of fuel and pesticides. The front of the school was big, very big. One side was for a football field and track, the other side of the walkway was for outside eating with benches and trees, bushes and flowers. “Your perfect and slightly expensive learning institute” she thought vaguely. Unexpectedly, Koubi felt a hand on her shoulder. “Good morning!! Kuo-chan!” Koubi turned around to see one of her best friends. “Demory! Good morning” she was greeted with a hug. Koubi noticed two figures coming up, “Casey? Aleka?” She called. Casey waved, Tania and Koubi waited for them to catch up. “Good morning Kuo-chan” Aleka greeted them and gave a small wave which Koubi returned. All four turned and began walking the rest of the way together. So nice…but I still can’t. Koubi felt the pain in her heart again. Tania was a girl of medium height with straight-layered-golden-brown hair. She always greeted people in the friendliest of ways and a smile plastered to her features. Tania loved to sing, wear many different kinds of clothes so she was always wearing a different color or style everyday, and give hugs. She had many friends but she was closest to the four of them just like they were closest to each other and her. Aleka was described to be medium height also, with straight, dark-brown hair that was trimmed, a pleasant smile and descent mood, and usually wore whatever she felt like. She was closest to Koubi and had known her longest. Casey was the tallest of all four and had short, red-brown hair with extending bangs. She was known to be funny part of the time and sarcastic the next. Koubi loved it when they were all together, smiling and laughing, just joking around like friends do. (Look up? New prophecy for warriors…four new sparks will lead to one rain and many storms, and then the snow/leaves/thistles will fall.) All of a sudden Koubi sensed the awful vibrations again; she turned around automatically looking frantically for Orpheus thinking “Why is he here?!” Just as the feeling of a returning memory came she felt the caress of his fingers and discovered a pair of silver eyes sneering above her. A mighty wind picked up and tinted the world gray. “Why?” Orpheus laughed and said straight in her face “Silly Kuo-chan, I am always with you…now” and laughed again with more menace. Koubi looked in to his gaze and whispered “no…” Orpheus’s silvery eyes blended with the sky and suddenly he was gone from her sight. He is still here somewhere, I can feel him… Koubi thought. “Koubi, what’s wrong?” Koubi realized Aleka was speaking to her and turned to see her friends all waiting for her further up the walk. “AH!” Blushing, she ran to catch up with them. I can’t tell anybody.

All through-out the school day Koubi could sense Orpheus’s presence, or at least what she felt was him and several times that day she thought she had seen a pair of eyes. Her first class was science with Mr. Hence and she shared that class with Demory. They sat beside each other so they were often grouped together. Mr. Hence was lenient and often let whispered conversations slide. Koubi was happy about this advantage; it just annoyed her when some students were disagreeable and rude. Those students often lead the class to be rowdy but Mr. Hence knew how to deal with them. Half-way through the period she had almost completely forgotten about Orpheus when she noticed something strange with the lights above her teacher’s head. Koubi thought she kept seeing a strange bend of color around them and when she squinted she could have sworn that they were shrouded in a mist. When Koubi tried to blink sleep out of her eyes it was gone. Koubi’s second class was a history class taught by Mrs. Tama. Koubi shared the class with none of her friends. Just like before, she sensed someone’s stare and discovered a frightening pair of eyes on a poster across the room. She almost stood up but caught her teacher’s eye and decided better of it. Looking again, they were gone. In third period Orpheus was calling her name, and in fourth through sixth periods he hovered in the lights, the books, where-ever she looked he seemed to be there. Koubi sat in her last class wishing Orpheus to leave her alone and when she actually saw him, she mouthed her thoughts to him. Orpheus simply leered and disappeared. He’s gone? After school, Koubi walked with her friends, who were laughing and joking. All of the normal teen girl stuff. Koubi thought nostalgically, almost laughing along with them. But she was thinking of something else. Why do I feel like I have done this many times before? But with some one else, who? She tried to remember, is it the person I am looking for? A memory appears in her mind and she sees a figure standing beside her, laughing. “A ha ha! Silly!” Koubi makes out it saying and her responding angrily “I’m not a--!” “Ha ha!” She sees herself frown. I…I just can’t remember. The memory fades and Koubi finds herself feeling sourly dejected.
