Blood poured from the wound on her leg. Her breath came in fast pants, constricted by her mask. She yearned to reach up and remove her mask but didn’t. First Rule while on the job; never let anyone see your face. She shoved her client forward growling softly. A shot went off from somewhere to her right. She knew they didn’t have a lot of time. She tore a piece of cloth bandage out of her pocket and wrapped her leg with a hurried precision. She knew the wound would heal in a few minutes but it wouldn’t matter of she couldn’t get the client to the safe house.
Subconsciously, she recited the second of the rules to herself. Rule two; never tell anyone your real name. She picked up the pace as they reached the street. No one would be on it at this hour. Perfect place to shoot the people on our tail.
A flash out of the corner of her eye made her grin. Not that anyone could see it but still. She drew her gun and aimed. Then, with practiced ease, she locked onto her target and pulled the trigger. The recoil on the gun barely phased her as she spun around and shot the person who was about to shoot her client. She frowned. Two people. That couldn’t be right. All hunting missions required minimally 3 people. Her ears twitched as she heard a whistle from behind her. Instinctively she tackled her client out of the bullets path. She growled at her own ignorance.
They had a blasted sniper. Mother of gumrocks, a Sniper! I guess I should really elaborate. A sniper is a top member of the pack they are in. They are the best of the best. In order to preserve order snipers are only sent out on the most dangerous of missions. Why the devil they consider this mission dangerous I will never know. Maybe, they overestimated me or maybe there is another clan after the client as well.
She roughly grabbed her client’s arm and grunted as she put pressure on her leg. She bit her and ignored a majority of the pain. She shoved her client forward into her car after opening the doors for them. She shut the door behind him quickly as another shot raced out, hitting the door an inch beside her. She slid into her seat and closed the door behind her quickly. She pushed her keys into the car and started it. A low purr escaped her as it started. With that she shifted it out of park and into drive and, with the car engine roaring, drove off.
It took several hours for the woman to get her client to the safe house. A safe house was a place where no matter what clients weren’t allowed to be killed by anyone. If someone broke this rule they were ostracized and killed by their former pack mates. It was one part of the lengthy code all packs memorized.
The female let out a soft sigh as she stepped out of the car. Her eyes scanned the area around her taking in the darkening landscape. The safe house and it’s generator stood side by side alone in the landscape. The back door of the car opened as the client stepped out of the car.
“Where are we?” He asked his two chins wobbling as he waddled closer to her. The woman could swear his shirt was about to lose its buttons because they were straining against the fabric so much. His eyes wear beady and black.
The female stared him down for a minute or two before she answered him. “At a safe house, because for some reason you have god damned snipers after you and I’m not quite sure why yet,” the voice changer attached to her mask making it come out all guttural and growling. She shoved him to the door and he took the hint and went inside.
Seems he’s not as dumb as he looks. Something was off with this whole situation. Something was bugging her about this and she couldn’t quite remember what it was. The lady scowled behind the mask. Her gloved hand slipped into one of the many hidden pockets she had on herself and pulled out her cell phone. She hit the first number and let it ring.
“Hello?” a male’s voice came through the ear piece to the phone.
“What is going on with my damndable client Source? He was snipers after his ass. You know I can’t take on no freakin Snipers, Source. So you had better have an answer for me,” She snarled sharply into the phone.
There was a moment of silence. “Jesus, He’s got snipers after him?” Sources voice was quiet and soft for a moment,” He just told us it was a small gang of miscreants after him.”
“So he broke the contract,” she said flatly.
“No the contact said he would be protected from any harm. It never specified from where the harm comes from,” Source said after a second.
The woman cursed,” Shit so I’m stuck with this guy until the contract is up?”
“Yup,” Source said,” You think you can hang in there for a couple more hours?”
“Probably, but if we get attacked again, I’m not sure what I’ll be able to do against some snipers,” The lady said frowning.
“Well good luck,” he said after a moment.
“Thanks,” she said before hanging up.
The woman sighed as she moved towards the safe house. The lady froze as what struck her as odd hit her. There weren’t supposed to be any electronics in a safe house. With no electronics that meant no generator. She visibly winced at the rookie mistake. He woman stretched forward smashing the door open and yanking her client out of the room.
“What the-? What do you think your doing?!!?” The client yelled. She ignored him and shoved him to the car.
“Get in,” The lady said simply as she opened the driver’s seat door and climbed in. The man blinked for a moment before following her orders. The car roared to a start and she jerked it into reverse and hit the gas just a second to late.
The safe house exploded in a mass of flames and flying debris. The windshield was smashed as some bit of the wall flew into it causing glass the fall all over her. She winced for a second time that day as some of it embedded itself into her skin cutting her.
Red drops of blood welled to the surface of her skin. The loud roar of the fire and explosion filled her ears causing her to cry out and clamp her hands down on her ears. She whimpered as she pushed herself up and ignored her own pain to focus on her client. She glanced back to see her client with a hole as big as a baseball through his neck. She sighed and dropped her head down onto her arms.
The woman growled softly as she pulled herself out of the car, removing shards of glass from her arms as she went along. The crunch of boots on the ground brought her attention to her and her client’s attackers. A low snarl grew at the back of her throat.
“Where is your client?” a voice asked calmly. The woman looked up at the sniper in front of her. The cat ears and tail meant nothing to her but the blank mask did. It confirmed the person in front of her, male or female, was a sniper.
“Dead, cause of you asswipes,” the lady said in a rasping tone.
“Unfortunate but it was not him we were after,” The voice said evenly.
The lady’s eyes widened behind her mask. “What do you want with me?” she gasped out panicking slightly.
“Me? Nothing. My client? Well quite a lot,” The person said chuckling slightly bending over and lifting her up. She felt a small prick on her neck and within seconds she was out cold.
It could have been hours or days later when she regained any coherency. She cracked her eyes open slightly and opened her mouth as if to breath only to get a mouthful of some green slime type stuff. Bubble floated slowly from her mouth and into the top of her glass area.
The world around her was tinted green and from what she could see it had a lot of computers and people in white coats running around. She shut her mouth stubbornly, determined not to loose anymore of her air then was necessary. One scientist stopped in front of her and looked up at her silently before his lips began to move.
Any sound he made was distorted and lost to her. She spread her lips in a silent snarl and he seemed to chuckle in response. He turned to another scientist and began speaking again. He must have been louder this time because she could make out a few words he said,” Proj-…. Mix…….. Heart Rat………. Fine…… access……. Now! ...”
A white hot pain filled her bones and veins. It seemed to leave no place untouched. It felt as if she had her hand on the burner of a stove only a million times more intense. Darkness begged at the edges of her vision but she didn’t give in until her muscles started to spasm and then the darkness overtook her.
You know the first thing you expect to see when you wake up is your bedroom ceiling. Especially if you remember going to sleep in your own bed the night before. You don’t expect to see a different ceiling then you normally do.
The girl blinked her grey/green eyes at the ceiling once more. “Well,” she said after a moment,” This is odd.” She tugged slightly at her arms noting them being bound down and her legs the same way.
The opening of the door to the room she was in had her looking up immediately. A man about five feet ten inches walked in. He was wearing a white mask with black swirl designs on it. ‘An Informant’ something in her mind seemed to whisper to her.
“Hello,” she said simply after a moment. She didn’t know what else to say at the moment. The man nodded in return but didn’t say anything.
“Where am I?” She asked after looking around the room, which was empty of everything but her bed. The man seemed to sigh before standing up and walking towards the door. ‘Say 9562, say it!’ The voice in her head encouraged her to say frantically.
“9,” she started the man froze his surprise palatable,”562.” He turned and moved to sit back in the chair.
“Seems you’ve only lost some of your memories, Echo. Not all as we had suspected,” the man started after a moment,” It was a pain to track you down and rescue you. We have no idea what those scientists did to you. When we found you we weren’t quite sure it was you as when we last saw you looked quite different then you do now.”
“So, my name’s Echo?” The woman asked after a moment.
The man seemed to nod but it was hard to tell. She was surprised she had caught the motion at all as it was. “Cool,” was all she could say.
“The only reason we knew you were you was because of the file they left out with some papers in it. Obviously most of them were missing but there were enough for us to piece together that they had done something really bad to you and it was likely you wouldn’t remember much afterwards,’ the man continued after a minute. The girl sighed and leaned back into the bed letting her muscles relax slightly. She found she couldn’t relax at all when he was in the room with her.
The man nodded after a moment and stood up. “I can see you’re getting tired so I will leave you here for now and come and explain more later on,” he said in a way of explanation. She nodded and watched as he exited the room and shut the door with a click before letting herself succumb to the urge to sleep once again.
Subconsciously, she recited the second of the rules to herself. Rule two; never tell anyone your real name. She picked up the pace as they reached the street. No one would be on it at this hour. Perfect place to shoot the people on our tail.
